In Loving Memory of Janice Smith Nicholson
November 27, 1945 – December 1, 2025

Janice Smith Nicholson, of Green Creek, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Born on November 27, 1945, she was the cherished daughter of John Horace and Julia Foster Smith.

A proud graduate of Polk Central High School and Western Carolina University, Janice dedicated her life to education, shaping young minds through her 40-year career in elementary teaching. Her warmth, humor, and patient guidance left lasting marks on both students and colleagues alike.

Janice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edgar Hugh Nicholson, and her dear sisters, Barbara and Nancy. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Leah Poteet; two grandsons; one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, and extended family who adored her.

In retirement, Janice returned to the simple joys she loved most—gardening in the sunshine, getting lost in a good book, and sharing laughter and stories with friends and family in her hometown of Green Creek.

She was a beautiful woman inside and out, and will be remembered for her impeccable sense of style and flair for fashion. Her love of music, appreciation for handsome men with long hair, and delight in good times will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Janice found deep comfort in her faith and loved Jesus with all her heart. Her favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm, from which she drew peace and strength throughout her life. Janice’s life was one filled with love, laughter, beauty, and learning. Her generous spirit and joyful heart will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.

A celebration of her life will be privately held by her immediate family.
